Syrian Democratic Forces Dissolve After Integration With Syrian Army 

The Syrian Democratic Forces worked in parts of northern and eastern Syria through many years of war. The fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces took part in fights against Daesh and helped make things safe in the areas the Syrian Democratic Forces controlled. 

​After the news about the dissolution came out, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met Abdi and his group at the People’s Palace in Damascus. The leaders talked about how to bring the Syrian Democratic Forces groups into the state systems. They also discussed how to make security and stability stronger. 

​The Syrian Democratic Forces were formed in 2015. Since then, the Syrian Democratic Forces became a force in the fight against Daesh in Syria. The Syrian Democratic Forces included Arab fighters. With US support, the Syrian Democratic Forces played a role in operations against the militant group. 

​The announcement came after an agreement between the SDF and the Syrian government on integrating the group’s military and civilian institutions into the state. The process has been carried out in stages, with discussions continuing over how the forces would be incorporated into the country’s military structure. 

Abdi said the circumstances surrounding the SDF had changed and described Syria as entering a new phase focused on peace and participation. His announcement formally ended the group’s role as an independent military force.

After the announcement that the Syrian Democratic Forces would dissolve, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met Abdi and Abdi’s delegation at the People’s Palace in Damascus. The meeting focused on the next steps for integrating the former SDF structures into Syrian state institutions and strengthening security and stability. 

​The Syrian government has described the move as an important step toward bringing military and administrative structures under state institutions. The integration is expected to continue through arrangements involving the former SDF personnel and government forces. 

For the Syrian Democratic Forces, the announcement brings an end to its existence as a separate military organisation after more than a decade of operations. The group’s integration also marks another stage in efforts to establish a unified military structure in Syria.  

The Syrian army will now absorb the former SDF forces under the integration process. Further details on the organisation of units and responsibilities are expected as the next phase of the agreement is implemented. 

The move places the Syrian Democratic Forces’ former fighters within the country’s state military structure and closes a major chapter in the group’s history.
