Messi Inter Miami Held to 2-2 Draw by San Diego

The Messi Inter Miami San Diego 2-2 draw left Miami frustrated on Sunday as the defending MLS champions dropped points in the race for the Eastern Conference lead. Anders Dreyer scored twice for San Diego, while Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez found the net for the hosts at Nu Stadium.
The result leaves Inter Miami 11 points behind Nashville with eight regular-season games remaining, making the dropped points particularly costly in the standings.
San Diego made the stronger start when Dreyer opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Jeppe Tverskov picked out the Danish forward with a precise through ball, allowing Dreyer to lift the ball over Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
The Lionel Messi Inter Miami goal came in the 24th minute. Messi curled a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area through a crowded box, with the ball clipping the inside of the post before crossing the line. It was his 101st goal for the club.
Miami then controlled much of the possession and territory. Messi, Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul all came close, but San Diego’s defence repeatedly survived the pressure.
The Inter Miami San Diego draw appeared to be heading Miami’s way after Suarez put the hosts ahead in the 74th minute. De Paul created the opening with a clever pass near the edge of the area, and the 39-year-old Uruguayan finished firmly to make it 2-1.
San Diego responded instead of fading late. Tverskov again found Dreyer with a pass over the Miami defence, and the forward calmly finished his second chance to level the match.
The late equaliser denied Miami a result that would have strengthened its position near the top of the conference.
The Messi Inter Miami San Diego 2-2 draw leaves Miami with little room for dropped points during the remaining regular-season schedule. The team must now focus on closing the gap to Nashville while maintaining its position among the Eastern Conference contenders.
San Diego nearly completed the comeback in stoppage time when Kieran Sargeant broke forward, but St. Clair produced the save to keep the score level.
The Inter Miami MLS Eastern Conference race will now enter its closing stretch with eight games remaining. Miami’s ability to turn territorial dominance into consistent results will remain central to its push up the standings.
