Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Miami Airport Runway 

An Amazon cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport sent thick black smoke into the sky on Sunday after the aircraft overran a runway, struck multiple vehicles, and caught fire. The incident forced the closure of all runways and taxiways, disrupting flights at one of the busiest airports in the United States. 

The aircraft was a Prime Air cargo plane arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it ran beyond the runway at about 2 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The Miami airport runway accident brought airport operations to a halt as emergency crews responded to the scene. 

The plane came to rest beside a roadway near two parked semi-trucks. Images from the scene showed the aircraft resting on its belly and appearing largely intact, although flames and heavy smoke surrounded parts of the plane. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said the aircraft hit several vehicles after leaving the runway. Responders found the airplane on fire, with 60 fire rescue units deployed to tackle the blaze and secure the area.

The incident had an immediate impact on air traffic. All runways and taxiways were closed, while a ground stop remained in effect. A ground stop stops flights from leaving the airport for a time. This means planes stay on the ground until it is safe to fly. 

The FAA said that there would still be delays even after Miami International Airport opened again. Flights arriving and leaving might not be able to go at speed.
